Merit Award in The 2nd Hong Kong Secondary School Cosmetic Formulation Competition
The 2nd Hong Kong Secondary School Cosmetic Formulation Competition is co-organized by the department of Chemistry in City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Society of Cosmetic Chemists (HKSCC) and The Cosmetic & Perfumery Association of Hong Kong Ltd (CPAHK). This is an inter-school competition with altogether 37 secondary school participated, within these, 25 schools were chosen to formulate lip care products. Some schools are very well-known tradition schools with excellent science records in interschool competitions before.
This competition aims to arouse students’ interest in Chemistry by learning how to synthesize their own lip-care product or face-care product, enable students to apply their chemistry knowledge learnt from classrooms to daily practical experiments and then eventually to a marketing, branding business level of cosmetic product for sale.
The integration of science and cosmetic career considerations in this competition is one of the remarkable benefits for all participants especially for senior form students. They will experience upon the launch of a saleable and branded product, there are a lot of crucial requirements such as trial-and-error through experiments, proven product safety by scientific tests, marketing research of similar products, marketing survey to gain feedbacks from end users and considerations of a presentable packaging of the end product…
Merit Awardees:
From June to July 2022, four of our form 5 students, Gesie Antioinette Castor ANG, HO Hoi Tung Idony LAU Kin Fung and Gabriele Ivana PATRICK, participated in this vigorous inter-school competition, despite there is a very tight 1- month timeframe, they successfully formulated an attractive and recognized formula for the lip-care products and received a merit award presented by the City University of Hong Kong!
They spent a lot of time in the Chemistry laboratory and conducted enormous scientific tests to secure the safety of their formula, making sure the products are durable and saleable! They also demonstrated perseverance in the laboratory and finally created an awarded formulation for the lip care product in return!
